Butlins and the Cartoonists' Club Boards

During the first Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain convention at the Butlins camp at Bognor Regis, someone had the idea of showing the clubs gratitude to the host by drawing cartoons on a large board, about twelve feet by eight feet in size and decorating it throughout the week with cartoons drawn by the members attending in memory of that convention. The ritual of presenting these boards to the managers of the camp at which they stayed persisted throughout the twenty seven years history of Butlins Cartoonists’ Club Conventions.

The cartoons shown below are more examples taken from some these boards.

  1. Hi everyone.

My name is Ken Kirby and I am series producing a series for BBC1 with Rolf Harris - Rolf on Welsh Art. I wonder if you can help me. One of the programmes is going to be on Welsh Cartoonist Gren Jones and have spoken to the club and people like Bill Tidy who knew Gren, we are having trouble finding any photos of the trips they had to Butlins in Phewlli in North Wales. Would anyone have any photos of these outings or any other shots of Gren with fellow cartoonists from the Club. It would really make the film. Many thanks Ken Kirby

    1. You could try Anne Kirkbride (Coronation Street) as her and her father attended some, though I can only recall the one at Skegness, but they may have attended the Pwllheli one's too, as her father is/was a cartoonist in the CCOGB.
I was there, too, but was only young at the time and attended most of them. I do have some of the autographs somewhere (including one Rolf's..a self 'portrait' though it is only small), but not sure if I managed to obtain Gren's.
      Hope that helps any some.
